ACES II Ejection Seat Painting Guide

1. Priming & Base Coat (Main Frame)
The main structure of the ACES II seat is painted in a semi-gloss or matte dark gull gray.

Main Frame: FS 36231 (Dark Gull Gray)

Tamiya: XF-54 (Dark Sea Grey) or a mix of XF-19 + XF-2 + a drop of XF-54

Mr. Hobby: H317 (Aqueous) / C317 (Mr. Color)

Vallejo: 71.277 (Dark Gull Gray)

Launch Rails / Back Elements: Often a slightly darker metallic or dark gray.

Tamiya: XF-56 (Metallic Grey) or XF-63 (German Grey)

2. Cushions & Fabric Parts
The survival pack and cushions vary slightly by era and aircraft, but the standard configuration is an olive drab/khaki green backrest and a dark green or black/sheepskin seat cushion.

Backrest Cushion (Olive Drab / Khaki Green):

Tamiya: XF-62 (Olive Drab) or XF-49 (Khaki)

Mr. Hobby: H78 / C38 (Olive Drab)

Vallejo: 71.016 (US Dark Green)

Seat Cushion (Dark Green / Sage Green):

Tamiya: XF-13 (JA Green) or XF-58 (Olive Green)

Mr. Hobby: H302 / C302 (Green FS 34092)

3. Belts and Harnesses
The restraint harnesses on the ACES II are typically a light tan, light gray, or olive green fabric with silver hardware.

Harness Straps (Light Gray / Tan):

Tamiya: XF-19 (Sky Grey) or XF-55 (Deck Tan)

Mr. Hobby: H325 / C325 (Gray FS 26440)

Vallejo: 71.296 (Light Gray)

Buckles & Hardware (Bright Silver):

Tamiya: X-11 (Chrome Silver)

Mr. Hobby: MC211 (Mr. Metal Color Chrome Silver)

Vallejo: 71.063 (Silver)

4. Details, Knobs & Ejection Handles
This is what makes the seat « pop » in the cockpit. Use a fine detail brush (0/0 or 000).

Ejection Pull Handle (Yellow & Black Stripes):

Base coat in flat white first, then paint Flat Yellow (Tamiya XF-3 / Mr. Hobby H4). Use a very fine brush or a black fine-liner pen to paint the Flat Black (Tamiya XF-1) stripes.

Emergency Oxygen Ring (Right Side):

Flat Green (Tamiya XF-5 / Mr. Hobby H6).

Survival Kit Deployment Handle (Left Side):

Flat White (Tamiya XF-2) or bright Flat Red (Tamiya XF-7 / Mr. Hobby H3).

Weathering Steps for Realism
Gloss Coat: Spray a clear gloss coat (Tamiya X-22 or Mr. Hobby GX100) to protect the base paint and prepare for washing.

Pin Wash: Apply a dark brown or black enamel wash (Ammo by Mig – PLW Deep Brown or Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color Black/Brown) into the recesses around the cushions, rivets, and harnesses. Clean up the excess with an odorless enamel thinner.

Matte Coat: Spray a flat clear coat (Tamiya XF-86 or Mr. Hobby H20) to remove the gloss sheen and give the fabric parts a realistic texture.

Dry Brushing: Lightly dry-brush the edges of the gray metal frame with a lighter gray (Tamiya XF-19) or a silver pencil to simulate worn paint and bare metal friction.
